Boy Scouts of America facing over 3,000 claims from former NY scouts


Settlement proposal
The BSA is proposing to pay roughly $220 million toward a trust to compensate tens of thousands of former members who say they were abused as Scouts. An additional $300 million may come from a voluntary contribution from local councils, the Boy Scouts said in court documents filed earlier this month; but the local organizations have given no formal commitment.
The number is a fraction of the $1 billion of the organization s estimated value, and a sliver of the value of its subsidiaries, including local councils as well as various trusts and endowments, which USA TODAY estimates could exceed $3.7 billion.  
The proposal is part of a reorganization plan put forth by the iconic nonprofit detailing how it intends to handle the massive child sex abuse case that’s threatening its existence – the largest ever involving a single national organization – and emerge as a viable entity.  ....

3 Long Island teens among 1st female Eagle Scouts in United States


Michelle Charlesworth has more on the owner of a heroic German shepherd who was released from a New Jersey rehab facility Tuesday.
These young women will have their trailblazing Eagle Scout ranking officially bestowed upon them during a special ceremony on February 15.
Representing the Theodore Roosevelt Council, Inc. Boy Scouts of America, the teens are part of Troop 186 in Wantagh, and they join hundreds of other young women around the county making up the Inaugural Class of female Eagle Scouts.
Girls have been part of co-ed programs offered by the Boy Scouts of America for decades, but it was only two years ago that young women were allowed into the traditional scouting program, which can help them become Eagle Scouts. ....
