The JEA board of directors scheduled a public rate hearing for Aug. 24 where it is expected to vote on the first water, sewer and irrigation capacity fee increases in 15 years, affecting builders and customers connecting to the city-owned utility’s system. The board also will vote on adjustments to electric rates, but JEA CEO Jay Stowe said at the June 22 board meeting that the changes will have a “net neutral” impact and not raise the average residential customer’s bill in fiscal year 2022. ....
The high cost of buying power from the Plant Vogtle nuclear plant will eventually force JEA to charge customers more for their electricity, but the utility is working through a way to keep the bottom-line cost for bills the same for the coming year. That was the outlook presented Friday to the JEA board when its Finance and Audit Committee met to review electric rates and a separate plan for increasing one-time water and sewer fees that builders pay when they add new developments to the JEA system. The proposal for electric bills would increase the base rate portion to help JEA absorb the cost of buying power from Plant Vogtle and simultaneously decrease the fuel charge assessed on customers bills.
