Historic Snowfall Predicted for Denver, but Reader Wonders Where the Storm Is

Weather forecasting has come a long way over the last three decades, says Marty Coniglio. Back in March 1990, when he told his news office that Denver would see a big blizzard in five days, his revelation was met with disbelief. Bigger and better computers doing more calculations led to better forecasts, he says.
So how much snow will Denver see this weekend? Looking at the models late Thursday, Coniglio went with totals of between 18 and 24 inches. But we re still a day or two away from seeing if he s right. In the meantime, readers have been posting a flurry of comments on the ....

Weather Forecasting Has Come a Long Way: Get Ready, Denver!

On Friday, March 2, 1990, a young, brash, confident meteorologist addressed the daily news editorial meeting at KCNC-TV (then “Colorado’s News Channel,” now “CBS4”) and stated that a blizzard would strike Colorado’s Front Range on Tuesday of the next week.
His declaration was met with skepticism bordering on pure disbelief. According to conventional wisdom, it was “impossible” to know Colorado’s weather more than one to two days in advance. Historically, that had been true: A young science, meteorology had been growing over the past century much like a puppy does from eight weeks to six months old.
Many of the essential physical and thermodynamic elements of weather were well understood during the first half of the twentieth century; the problem was how to “model” those behaviors into the future. The size of the atmosphere is mind-boggling. In just the lower parts, where most of our weather is formed, it’s roughly 854 million cubic miles in volume, ....

Denver Weather Station: Why Official Location Doesn't Matter

On February 22, Denver City Council will consider a proposal to partner with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and install a weather observation station on the Sand Creek Uplands Open Space at the site of the former Stapleton Airport. This site will provide automated real-time and long-term data, but will not replace Denver International Airport as the official weather observation site for Denver.
Yes, for the umpteen-billionth time, DIA sucks as a weather-observation location for Denver proper. But you know what? It doesn’t matter.
There are a lot of places in the United States where 23 miles doesn’t make much difference in what the weather is doing over days, weeks, months or years. That’s not the case with Denver. There s a world of difference between the weather downtown and 23 miles away at DIA because of the complex terrain we have around here. Here’s just a short list of what changes the weather between the airport and central Denver: ....

Ryan Haarer on Why He Left 9News for Real Estate

Haarer s rise in TV news was rapid. He graduated from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State in 2012, then worked at KVOA, the NBC affiliate in Tucson, for a couple of years before landing at 9News in Denver. After three years, he left the outlet to be with his girlfriend, fellow reporter Liz Kotalik, in Phoenix, where he freelanced for CBS s KPHO, but returned not long after when 9News positions opened up for both of them. Kotalik, to whom Haarer is engaged (the couple postponed their wedding in March 2020 because of the COVID-19 crisis), is still a staffer at the station. ....
