Researchers discovered a veritable mountain of guano deep in a cave in Jamaica, deposited over the course of 4,300 years. Left largely undisturbed, the pile stands more than six feet tall. Analysis of undigested material in the dung paints a timeline of everything from dry periods in the Middle Ages to the arrival of Christopher Columbus and the advent of the gas-powered engine.

Natural blue color from red cabbage could replace artificial food dye

Natural blue color from red cabbage could replace artificial food dye Dan Avery For Dailymail.com © Provided by Daily Mail MailOnline logo Blue is the world s most popular color but the hue rarely appears in nature, so manufacturers have had to resort to artificial dyes and chemicals to create blue food. That could soon change, now that a naturally occurring blue pigment has been discovered in red cabbage. Scientists with the Mars candy corporation found traces of anthocyanin - a pigment that gives red, purple, blue and black foods their color - that was coded blue. They were able to increase that amount by treating the cabbage s red-colored anthocyanins with a designer enzyme that turned them blue.

Rare cuckoo wasp species lays its eggs in other bees hives Dan Avery For Dailymail.com © Provided by Daily Mail MailOnline logo Cuckoo wasps are the ultimate bad houseguests, hiding their eggs in other insect s nests and then allowing them to hatch and eat their siblings.    Researchers in Norway were able to identify an entirely new cuckoo wasp based on a single specimen.  To infiltrate the homes of unsuspecting wasps, the killer insects mimic their hosts pheromones and to avoid inbreeding, each species of cuckoo wasp chooses a different host.  While the newcomer was visually and genetically almost identical to Chrysis brevitarsis, it spoke a different chemical language, meaning it was an entirely new species
