Researchers discovered a veritable mountain of guano deep in a cave in Jamaica, deposited over the course of 4,300 years. Left largely undisturbed, the pile stands more than six feet tall. Analysis of undigested material in the dung paints a timeline of everything from dry periods in the Middle Ages to the arrival of Christopher Columbus and the advent of the gas-powered engine.
