Plan Indonesia Conducts Rapid Need Assessment to Help the West Sulawesi Earthquake Survivors

Grief has hit Indonesia again.
A set of earthquakes has been occurring in the West Sulawesi province since Thursday (14/01). One of the largest earthquakes, with a 6.2 magnitude, struck on Friday (15/01), demolishing buildings and local facilities. Tremors are still being felt today, Monday (18/01), with effects reported in Majene, Mamuju, Mamasa, and Polewali Mandar. A tsunami warning has also been issued, especially for residents of Sulawesi’s western coast.
According to The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNBP), by Monday, about 485,232 lives are predicted to be affected by this earthquake. Approximately 27,850 people are have been forced to evacuate from their homes, while 73 people lost their lives and 743 people have been injured. Several facilities have also been impacted, with electricity and mobile signals being cut in some areas and three roads demol ....

The year is coming to an end, but we still see no end to the COVID-19 pandemic despite some recent good news about vaccines. According to Gadjah Mada University researchers, this pandemic might last until early 2022 in Indonesia.
This obviously calls for more attention to fighting the pandemic, while at the same time calling for a more serious effort to help citizens navigate it safely. This is so, especially, in case of youth, who are facing the risk of unemployment, as economic challenges continue to take a toll within the country.
According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the Indonesian youth unemployment rate before the COVID-19 pandemic was already at 13.03 percent. In other words, about 40 percent of all unemployed people in the country were young people.
