Approaching the grassy quad of the Fort Hays State University campus on foot Saturday morning, 5-year-old Cooper Randa observed with awe, “There’s hundreds of eggs.”
Holding hands with his grandma Sherry Dreher for the 47th annual Kiwanis Easter Egg Hunt, Cooper explained it wasn’t his first Easter egg hunt.
“I did it once before at Walmart,” he said, his grandma looking suprised. “There were lots of eggs. I found one on the roof.”
Dreher laughed. “He’s got imagination.”
Randa and Dreher were among hundreds gathered Saturday for the annual hunt, which was canceled last year by the pandemic. ....

Rep. Barbara Wasinger, R-Hays, is convinced budget problems at public universities in the Kansas Board of Regents system are tied to bloated academic programs and declining enrollment.
TOPEKA Rep. Barbara Wasinger peppered state university administrators with assertions that campuses across Kansas were a morass of academic program duplication, dwindling student enrollment and unreasonable consumption of tax dollars.
Her perspective not universally shared by her Republican and Democratic colleagues carried weight as vice chairwoman of the House Higher Education Budget Committee. The panel was responsible for sifting through budget requests on behalf of six public universities managed by the Kansas Board of Regents as well as Washburn University, community colleges and technical colleges within the board’s jurisdiction. A comparable budget process has been occurring in the Kansas Senate ....

Hundreds of University of Kansas faculty and staff members are objecting to a new Kansas Board of Regents policy that they say circumvents professional standards and violates the university’s commitments as a member of the American Association of Universities.
On Jan. 20, the Kansas Board of Regents approved a two-year policy that gives university CEOs more power to suspend, dismiss or terminate employees including tenured faculty members in light of the financial crisis many universities face.
A statement signed by more than 550 KU faculty and staff members states that the policy violates two of the three core principles of the Association of American Universities: shared governance and academic freedom. It also bypasses established processes KU already had in place in the instance of declared financial exigency. ....

David Letterman probably did much to instill the notion of “Top 10 Lists” in our popular culture. But decades before the late-night host did his thing, newspapers were culling past editions to create year-end round-ups of their top stories.
Ten is a good number; after all, it’s what we can count on our two hands, so in keeping with tradition, here’s a list of the top 10 news items at Fort Hays State University this year. The list, roughly in chronological order, is certainly not all-encompassing – there are great stories and good news every day at FHSU – but it does provide a means of looking back and recounting some of the many blessings we enjoyed in 2020. ....
