Crews align the first of three new engines for The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway Friday, March 26, 2021, as it is slowly lowered onto the new railroad tracks at the cog railroad station in Manitou Springs by two large cranes. The engine, three new passenger cars and a new snowblower arrived Friday and were placed on the new tracks as the railroad prepares for its soft opening May. 1. Pam Zubeck Hundreds of residents packed the City Council chamber on May 24, 2016, to plead that Council reject a proposed land swap that would give 189 acres of open space, known as Strawberry Fields, to The Broadmoor hotel. Council approved it anyway. Over the last four years, other groups of residents â some who organized and hired legal counsel â have passionately conveyed their thoughts on a variety of contentious issues only to find Council vote the other way. Thatâs not lost on several people who hope to win a Council seat in the April 6 election; some named it as their chief reason for running. ....

Today we’ll learn about the impact of Colorado Springs’ two Templetons and The Broadmoor’s now defunct ski resort. Templeton Gap From Gazette reader Diana Gantz: Was there an actual ‘gap’ that Templeton Gap was named after and if so, where is/was it? Was it named after someone? There were actually two people named Templeton with local roads or structures named after them. Templeton Gap was named after AJ Templeton, who was lured to the region during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush (1858-1861). He would later work a number of odd jobs, including as a law enforcement officer and as a rancher. A road, which is believed to be a preexisting Native American trail, connected Colorado Springs to Black Forest. The Templeton Ranch was nearby and the road was named after it. ....
