England now has more Blue Flag beaches than holiday favourites Cyprus, Mexico or South Africa, with 77 in total. This is up from 71 in 2019 (the accolade wasn’t awarded in 2020 due to the pandemic).
Hornsea and Scarborough North Bay in Yorkshire, Leysdown in Kent and Crooklets Beach in Cornwall were among the beaches to receive a Blue Flag distinction this year after missing out in 2019.
Meanwhile, popular spots including Brighton, Margate Main Sands in Kent and Skegness in Lincolnshire have all retained their Blue Flag status.
For the first time, England also has a Blue Flag marina: the Royal Albert Dock and Salthouse Dock Marina in Liverpool. ....

LankaWeb – The 'smart and cheeky' Aboriginal boy teaching Australia a lesson

When Dujuan doesn’t come home from school one day, his mum and grandma go out looking for him until late in the night. If the police find him first, they will report it to welfare, and he could end up in foster care – or worse, juvenile detention.
“You know, your little age is the right age to go to juvenile centre,” Megan warns him.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are vastly over-represented in the Australian penal system. Nationwide, they make up close to 70% of those aged 10-14 in youth detention, despite being only about 6% of the population in that age group. In the Northern Territory, in which Alice Springs is located, the situation is even worse: at the end of March, 31 out of 33 young people in detention (94%) were Aboriginal. ....

A documentary about a 10-year-old Aboriginal boy s experience in school, In My Blood It Runs, has reignited a debate about Australia s failure to give indigenous children a good education and a fair start in life.
Listen carefully, the teacher tells the class. This one isn t a story, this is information, or non-fiction - it s fact.
She s holding up The Australia Book, a picture book from 1952, and reads: In Botany Bay, Cook landed for the first time in a new country. Then he sailed up the coast, mapping as he went. On an island in Cape York he raised the English flag. And he claimed for the English country the whole of this new land. ....

Trio of lows churning the Tasman Sea
Ben Domensino,
Friday May 7, 2021 - 10:36 EST
If you live along the southern half of the NSW coast, it s probably worth staying out of the water today.
A complex low pressure system spinning over the Tasman Sea has been sending large waves and blustery showers towards NSW during the last couple of days.
This system has already produced more than 200mm of rain along the state s south coast. One rain gauge at Brogers Creek collected a whopping 303mm during the 48 hours to 9am on Friday. Nearby, Kiama s 94mm during the 24 hours to 9am Friday was its heaviest rain since February last year. ....

Nearly 2000 Indigenous artefacts have been repatriated from overseas galleries, museums and universities after a call out for the return of objects significant to Australia’s cultural heritage.
Those from the single largest collection -1848 objects that were in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem for more than half a century - will be returned to traditional communities by the end of the year.
The items - including ax heads, scrapes and chopping tools thought to be many thousands of years old - are being catalogued. Where clear provenance can be determined, they will in the coming months be returned to Indigenous communities in NSW, Tasmania, Victoria and the Northern Territory. ....
