April's 'From the Woods Today' welcomes spring with woodland topics | News

LEXINGTON — University of Kentucky Forestry and Natural Resources Extension’s weekly online program, “From the Woods Today,” looks at the forest through the trees in April, offering relevant and interesting information about woodlands and wildlife each Wednesday at 11 a.m. EDT. 
The program streams on Zoom and on Facebook Live. Hosts Billy Thomas and Reneé Williams, UK extension forester and information specialist, respectively, welcome UK specialists who share their knowledge of Kentucky’s forests and the creatures that call them home. 
April’s episodes include: 
April 7: Matt Springer, assistant extension professor of wildlife management, will talk about the Black Vulture Project, and Ellen Crocker, assistant extension professor of forest health, will bring insight into pesky plants.  ....

Southeast Closed April 2 for Designated Holiday


Southeast Missouri State University offices will be closed and classes will not be in session in observance of the designated holiday on Friday, April 2. Southeast observes 11 holidays annually. The designated holiday is the only holiday of the 11 that is determined by the president of the University.
Offices will reopen and classes will resume at 8 a.m. Monday, April 5. Specific holiday hours for various campus facilities are as follows:
Student Recreation Center/Student Aquatic Center:
The Student Recreation Center (SRC) and Student Aquatic Center will be closed Friday, April 2, and Sunday, April 4.
The SRC will be open Thursday, April 1 from 5:30 a.m.-8 p.m. and Saturday, April 3 from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. ....

Tuesday night freeze impacts on orchards appear to be limited


The impacts to this year’s apricot crop are a bit more up in the air, but a freeze Tuesday night appears to have generally spared local peach growers.
Bruce Talbott of Talbott Farms in Palisade said that fruit trees are only now breaking out of their winter dormancy, helping protect them from the impacts of Tuesday night’s freeze.
“Everything except apricots is still very durable. We can probably take 10 degrees (as a low) and still have a peach crop and we weren’t there. We weren’t close to there,” he said.
The official Grand Junction low temperature Wednesday morning was 20 degrees. Kris Sanders, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Grand Junction, said the agency received reports of low temperatures ranging from 16 degrees just north of Fruita to 29 in Palisade. However, localized temperatures in the Palisade area can vary widely based on factors such as topography, and Talbott said Talbott Farms recorded a low of 18 degrees at o ....

Hydrangea blooms pop with correct location, pruning


DEAR AMOR: Can you help me find a cure for the Bigleaf Hydrangea that just won’t bloom on top? I only get three or four small blooms on the bottom edges. Why? — Michelle
