A Jackson neighborhood is set to see big improvements in the coming years. The MLK Corridor Improvement Authority is getting that work started with the first official meeting of its Board of Directors on Thursday, May 27 at 5:30 p.m. The virtual meeting will be held on the Zoom platform. The main goal of the improvement authority is to promote the redevelopment of the Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Prospect Street commercial corridors. Boundaries of the improvement authority are S. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive from Downtown Jackson to the City Limits at W. South Street and Prospect Street in its entirety from Fourth Street to S. Cooper Street. The budget approval provides reinvestment of just over $43 million for community and economic development, including almost $2 million in investment through six corridor improvement authorities and a neighborhood business improvement district. This will increase investment in neighborhood business districts and neighborhoods of focus. The Grand Rapids Economic Development Department administers 10 separate boards and authorities, and Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. administers the Downtown Development Authority and Monroe North Tax Increment Finance Authority. Artifacts being revealed as part of Black History Month celebration in Jackson Updated Jan 31, 2021; Facebook Share JACKSON, MI Jackson will celebrate Black History Month by sharing African-American artifacts and displays with the community through a collaboration with the Ella Sharp Museum. Beginning Feb. 1, the city of Jackson’s website and social media platforms will feature 10 posts throughout the month featuring never-before-seen artifacts from the Ella Sharp Museum’s main collection. The oldest artifact to be displayed is an 1893 African-American City Directory featuring black families who lived in Jackson during that era and showing the city has had an established African-American community for more than 100 years, City Spokesman Aaron Dimick said. ....
