Mass Poetry announces the 2021 Massachusetts Poetry Festival COURTESY OF MASS POETRY Mass Poetry announced the 2021 Massachusetts Poetry Festival will be held from May 13 to 16 with some preview events earlier in May. Readings, performances and workshops will take place virtually at https://festival.masspoetry.org with select, limited exhibitions occurring in person in Salem. The event is open to the public, with tickets available by suggested donation and free to students. The 2021 festival, now a biennial event, showcases a roster of poets from across the commonwealth and the country. More than 50 events in total feature over 100 poets including Guggenheim Foundation Award recipient Naomi Shihab Nye; Pulitzer Prize winner Tyehimba Jess; international bestselling author Lang Leav; and American Book Award winner Martín Espada; as well as Victoria Chang, Jos Charles, Khadijah Queen, Patricia Spears Jones, Ariana Reines and Dara Wier. ....

This year s festival marks its return to Salem since its 10-year anniversary event in 2018, and following next month s events the festival will return biennially. When I was a senior in high school I was a bit of a mess getting into all sorts of things I shouldn’t have, not showing up, and was very close to getting kicked out. I was just beginning to read contemporary poetry and listening to spoken word, and there was a teacher that let me do a final project in English class that was, essentially, a groaningly privileged teenager ripoff of Gil Scott-Heron’s “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.” It was utter trash, but I learned how much I liked playing around with language and rhythm, and most importantly, that doing that was a thing a person was allowed to do and be valued for doing. ....
