Cop selling guns killed in Albay entrapment operation

(PNA) – A police personnel allegedly selling handguns was killed in a shootout with the police during an entrapment operation in Daraga, Albay on Friday, May 7.

Maj. Maria Luisa Calubaquib, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office 5, identified the slain police officer as Corporal Joel Tualla of Libmanan, Camarines Sur, who was assigned at the Polangui Municipal Police Station.

The report said Tualla attempted to sell a .9mm KG9 sub-machine gun and .45 caliber pistol to a police undercover agent in Barangay Bañag at around 11:05 a.m.

“Tualla, sensing that it was police set up, he drew his service firearm and fired at the approaching police operatives, forcing the police raiding team to retaliate, killing the suspect on the spot,” Calubaquib said. ....

6 HEIs in Bicol sign MOA to share faculty resources, ensure quality education to Bicolanos – CHED – Manila Bulletin

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) said Saturday, May 8, that six Memoranda of Agreement have been signed among higher education institutions (HEIs) in the Bicol region to pave way for the sharing of faculty resources through the adjunct faculty system and ensure the delivery of quality education to Bicolanos.

The CHED said the following agreements were signed:
-Dr. Emilio B. Espinosa Sr. Memorial State College of Agriculture and Technology (DEBESMSCAT) and Sorsogon State University (SSU) on Industrial Technology
-DEBESMSCAT and Camarines Norte State College (CNSC) on Environmental Science
-DEBESMSCAT and Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA) on Crop Science and Environmental Science ....

MANILA – With the retirement of Police Chief Gen. Debold Sinas and with his birthday today, May 8, human rights group Karapatan believes that the recent series of arrests of activists is the general’s despedida.
Cristina Palabay, secretary general of Karapatan, made this statement after four individuals were arrested on May 6 in the Southern Tagalog region. The day before, Karapatan alerted the public after receiving information that another series of police and military raids in Southern Tagalog is in the offing. ....

DARAGA: Thousands of residents were fleeing coastal and other hazardous areas in the eastern Philippines on Sunday as a powerful typhoon barrelled towards the disaster-prone archipelago.
Officials warned 2.5-metre (eight-feet) high waves and landslides posed the biggest threats as Nock-Ten closed in on the Bicol peninsula and nearby islands. “We went around with megaphones and gave instructions to our people to eat breakfast, pack and board the military trucks,” Alberto Lindo, an official of Alcala, a farming village of 3,300 people near the active Mayon volcano, said.
“There are large ash deposits on the slopes. Heavy rain can dislodge them and bury our homes in mud.” ....
