Cold weather is boosting ice-fishing fortunes!
Favorable temperatures are having a corresponding effect on anglers’ ice-fishing fortunes as bigger lakes are finally beginning to catch. There is even word that at least one of Maine’s iconic smelt camps expects to be in business by next week!

Jim from AJs Bait in Meredith said that almost overnight additional parts of Lake Winnipesaukee are locking up. The latest is Meredith Bay, where shanties and even a tractor (tasked with clearing snow for hockey) have been observed on the ice! Most everything that swims in this big lake can be caught in Meredith Bay. Anglers are catching lakers and white perch in Center Harbor and there are reports of 5 inches of ice in the Long Island stretch on the right-hand side of the bridge. Regarding other water bodies, most of Newfound Lake has been good as has at least the north end of Winnisqua ....

Minot seeks funds for Puppy Dog Coulee flood project | News, Sports, Jobs

An aging drainage system for the Dakota Square Mall area won’t last much longer, according to engineers. Money for a more modern system is the big hurdle, and the Minot City Council took a step it hopes will address that obstacle in approving an application for a federal grant Tuesday.
The city is seeking about $9.4 million from the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) program of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The city wants to resolve flooding potential associated with the Puppy Dog Coulee, one of the five major drainage basins around the city of Minot. The drainage basin is about 9,500 acres, most of it outside city limits. In comparison, that’s about the equivalent of 53% of the city’s land area, according to Minot City Engineer Lance Meyer. ....

JCB Bait in Cheshire, described the swarms of families, friends, and solo-anglers who have been on a pilgrimage to Pontoosuc, Onota, Buel, and Cheshire, looking to spend some time outdoors. Don’t be put off by potential pressure; there is an awful lot of water out west and you can surely find your own spot away from other anglers. Jim says anglers are getting “everything and from everywhere”. Pike are the main draw and can be found among all these water bodies. For a shot at a slab largemouth bass, Cheshire Reservoir might just get the nod. Pontoosuc is a good choice for trout. ....
