On Monday evening Mount St. Mary’s University announced that its embattled president, Simon P. Newman, has resigned his post. Earlier this month, 87 of the Catholic university’s 90 faculty members had petitioned the Board of Trustees to remove Newman as president. The university said in a written statement on Monday evening that Mr. Newman’s resignation was effective immediately. “The board is grateful to President Newman for his many accomplishments over the past year, including strengthening the university’s finances, developing a comprehensive strategic plan for our future, and bringing many new ideas to campus that have benefited the entire Mount community,” said John E. Coyne III, the board’s chairman. “We thank him for his service.” ....

Sanford will immediately begin his new role as university president. Sanford, who was appointed by the university’s board of trustees, is the 10th president at the private Catholic university in Irving. Previous President Thomas S. Hibbs announced his resignation in January and plans to return to a full-time faculty position at Baylor University, where he previously worked. He will continue to serve as a professor of philosophy at UD for the remainder of this academic year. ....

University of Dallas officials said they will not take action against a professor who wrote a Facebook post denouncing a transgender woman who is the Biden administration’s nominee for assistant health secretary. The controversy began when David Upham, an associate professor who is chairman of the school’s politics department and director of legal studies, wrote in a now-deleted post that Rachel Levine “put on a somewhat convincing hormonal costume to go along with his conventionally feminine dress,” according to a report in the campus paper, ....
