A campaign against plans to create more than 3,500 homes north of Dorchester is being ramped up THOUSANDS of people have signed a petition against controversial plans for a 4,000-home development north of Dorchester. The Dorchester North extension has been put forward as a preferred option for housing in Dorset Council s Local Plan, which is currently out for consultation. Campaign group, Save the Area North of Dorchester (STAND), organised a petition to show the strength of feeling against the plans, and it has now closed with more than 5,000 signatures. The petition will be presented by the group to a meeting of Dorset Council s full council on Thursday, July 15. ....

By Vicky Nash Audience and Content Editor Thomas Hardy s birthday events in Dorchester will be scaled back this year IN a break from tradition Dorchester’s new Mayor and Mayoress will be the only representatives from the town council at this weekend’s Thomas Hardy birthday events. Normally the entire town council marches, in full regalia, to the wreath laying ceremony at Hardy’s statue at the Top o’ Town. Other events planned by the Thomas Hardy Society will also be low key with limited numbers because of on-going Covid restrictions. After the Saturday afternoon wreath laying, which will include Hardy readings, the official party will walk to St Peter’s Church to lay a wreath at the statue of Dorset dialect parson-poet the Rev William Barnes. ....
LOCAL writer wins poetry competition with poem inspired by the works of Thomas Hardy. Peter Tait, is celebrating after being selected as the winner of McCarthy Stone’s recent poetry competition, which called for Dorset residents to try their hand at writing a poem inspired by Thomas Hardy. Run by the manager and developer of retirement communities McCarthy Stone, the competition was launched to help celebrate the town’s literary history and its close connection with the famous Dorset-based author by tasking local residents to write their very own poem. The competition was judged by the Chairman of the Thomas Hardy Society, Dr Tony Fincham, who chose Peter’s poem entitled ‘Will You Not Remember’, as the winning entry. ....
