Historian behind National Trust's imperial project launches extraordinary attack on ministers

The academic behind the National Trust s Woke review to identify properties with links to colonialism today astonishingly accused the government of  weaponising history by trying to stop Left-wing academics denigrating Britain s past.
The study, which blacklisted - among others - the Lake District home of avid anti-slaver William Wordsworth because his brother was involved in the trade, was accused of re-writing history after assembling a team of left-wing and politically biased experts.
Its leader, Professor Corinne Fowler, spoke today as Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden prepared to use a meeting with 25 heritage organisations to urge them to adopt a rounded view of Britain s past that does not focus excessively on the empire.  ....

King Henry VIII crown: Mystery of solid gold jewel found after 400 years and worth £2m

Kevin approached me as a best-selling historian to research his discovery.
The crowned golden figure, holding a shimmering orb and sceptre, stands on a spotted antelope, which I recognised immediately as the heraldic beast of the 15th century Lancastrian king Henry VI.
A pious man who suffered bouts of mental illness, Henry’s failed rule had led to the period of civil strife we know as the Wars of the Roses.
He was murdered in 1471 on the orders of his victorious rival, the Yorkist king Edward IV. But Henry VI had a remarkable afterlife.
People decided that, while he had been a bad king, he had been a good man, and declared him a saint. Subsequent “miracles” attested to his power. ....

Is this the crown jewel of metal detecting?

A golden king rises from the mud of a lonely field, where he had lain undisturbed for the best part of 400 years.
In his left hand he holds a shimmering orb, in the other an equally lustrous royal sceptre. At his feet crouches a white antelope, the king’s personal heraldic beast.
His Majesty’s sudden appearance is altogether astonishing.
Kevin Duckett cannot hope to surpass his discovery of what is thought to be an exquisite fragment of the lost crown of the Tudor dynasty, which had once adorned the head of Henry VIII
This is not an Arthurian myth or a tale of English folklore but the extraordinary story of what could be one of the greatest archaeological finds in Britain. ....

36 Winter Quotes That Give You Warm Feelings On Cold Days
Feeling the winter blues? These quotes will pick you up.
Dec 23, 2020
Winter is here whether we like it or not. I’m one of those people who says I can’t wait for winter. Then when it gets here, my fingers and toes are cold, my nose is runny, and I’m ready for summer again. If you’re feeling anything like I am, then maybe these winter quotes will help you appreciate the season a little bit more.

Some people experience seasonal depression, like Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which can make it extra difficult to get into the holiday spirit. You can fight off the winter blues by trying to exercise regularly, keeping your blinds open as much as possible, connect with friends and family, eating a balanced diet, taking alone time when you need it, planning a vacation, or jo ....
