Book review: Freeman offers new heart-pounding tale

Reviewed by: Chuck Frederick, News Tribune
The latest work from New York Times bestselling author Brian Freeman is “very different from my others,” the Minnesotan said.
But that’s definitely in a good way perhaps in an even more heart-pounding, what-a-ride kind of way. A lot like the parallel universes that torment and baffle Dylan Moran throughout “Infinite,” the new novel finds a place seamlessly with Freeman’s popular-particularly-in-Duluth and set-mostly-here Detective Jonathan Stride series of books as well as his other works over a 15-years-and-counting writing career.
Rather than Duluth, “Infinite” is set in Chicago as well as in the “Many Worlds” that, in the book, are created with each of life s choices. After failing to save his wife from a roaring river that consumes her and their car, Dylan Moran realizes a different him is traveling between these planes of reality, with evil intent. He finds that he needs to save himself from him ....

Thrillers: Spymaster Berry weaves an engrossing tale

In the mesmerizing
“The Kaiser’s Web” (Minotaur, 452 pages, $28.99), the tried and true Steve Berry exceeds even himself in crafting his most ambitious and relevant thriller to date. A no-holds-barred, high-stakes romp with echoes of class spy novelists like John le Carré, Len Deighton, and Alistair MacLean.
Berry’s Hitchcockian “McGuffin” this time out is a Soviet spy dossier dating back to World War II that has the potential to upend the balance of power in Europe and, thus, the world. Good thing hero-without-portfolio Cotton Malone is on the job to prevent a catastrophic conclusion to an election in Germany, making that country only the first to fall in the face of the true fate of the primary Nazi principles. And the race is on to recover the mysterious dossier of the title that contains the terrifying revelations certain to bring the world to its knees. ....

When “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” was published some 15 years ago, it accelerated an unofficial crime subgenre with a rebooted style of heroine the kick-ass female. Of course this wasn’t exactly new: Sue Grafton, Marcia Muller and other writers of previous generations wrote female protagonists who take no tea for the fever. But Stieg Larsson and the myriad 21st century writers who stand on their shoulders have taken those characters to new heights of physical prowess even as they sometimes sucked plot, character development and even logic into their thrillers’ action-packed vortex. ....
