Sailing is in the blood of St. Thomas’ Holmberg family. In fact, it’s a water sport excelled at and enjoyed by three generations.
Family patriarch and Chicago native Dick Holmberg first visited the Virgin Islands in the 1950s while serving on a submarine in the U.S. Navy. This was the first step of what would ultimately foster a family legacy and a surname recognized in the sailing community literally around the world. Visit number two came a few years later when Holmberg and his bride Louise honeymooned on St. Thomas and decided to make the territory their home. ....

After experiencing hurricanes and a global pandemic that shutdown tourism, the U.S. Virgin Islands is reclaiming its place as a standout Caribbean destination.
The past four years have been quite a historic and challenging period for the
U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI). In September 2017, St. Thomas and St. John experienced the devastating Hurricane Irma, and then, Hurricane Maria hit St. Croix. The islands spent 2018 and 2019 recovering, but then the COVID-19 pandemic completely shut down tourism throughout the world in 2020.
I visited St. Croix, and the USVI, for the first time in 2017, before the hurricanes. The culture, spirit of community, and hospitality instantly hooked me. Since then, I have visited in 2018 and May 2021. And you know what? With all that the USVI has endured in the last four years, it is very clear that the people are determined, undaunted, and focused on once again being a standout Caribbean destination, even in a post-COVID world. ....

Strong Sponsor Support Enhances MVP Program with 6 New Sailboats

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Strong sponsor support enabled the Marine Vocational Program (MVP) to enhance its ability to teach students marine skills such as sailing with the donation of six sailboats as part of the MVP’s Happy Island Sailing Club. The vessels, one Flying Scot and five Optimist dinghies, are key craft in teaching 10- to 18-year-old students all points of sail, enabling them to learn to sail the craft themselves. The donation of these sailboats proved the successful outcome of a six-month campaign in which sponsor support came in waves. ....

USVI's Krygsveld Wins 28th International Optimist Regatta

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Fourteen-year-old Tanner Krygsveld focused on maintaining his lead as he started the third and final day of racing in the 28th International Optimist Regatta (IOR), hosted at St. Thomas Yacht Club (STYC), June 18 to 20. The St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands sailor led the event from the first day, and despite a strong field of fellow competitors representing 6 nations – Antigua, Canada, the Cayman Islands, Puerto Rico, U.S.A, and all three U.S. Virgin Islands – and winds 15- to 18-knots, Krygsveld finished the day’s first race in second and ultimately won the 10-race regatta by 16 points. This makes Krygsveld the third U.S. Virgin Islander in the IOR’s nearly three-decade history to champion the event, with Cy Thompson, Teddy Nicolosi and Mia Nicolosi having done so in 2000, 2015 and 2016, respectively. ....

U.S. Virgin Islands Invites Travelers to its Shores

The U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism has big plans to strengthen its position as a leading Caribbean destination for marine and yacht tourism.
Speaking after last weekend s St. Thomas Yacht Club Invitational Regatta,
Joseph Boschulte, USVI Commissioner of Tourism, said the department s focus on welcoming mariners throughout the COVID-19 pandemic has returned strong dividends for the destination.
“Despite numerous pandemic-related challenges, we have leveraged the talent and creativity of our team to sharpen our focus on our incredible marine and charter yacht industry,” said
Commissioner Boschulte, who believes the U.S. Virgin Islands will “take full advantage of our natural resources and assets to deliver world-class experiences for visitors arriving on our shores.” ....
