REAP 'a move in right direction but with downsides' - Macra

The new Results-based Environmental Agri Pilot Project (REAP) scheme has been described as a “step in the right direction” by Macra na Feirme.
However, the young farmers’ organisation maintained that elements of the pilot scheme “must be reconsidered”.
Details of the scheme came to light last week following meetings between the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and farm organisation. The reaction to the pilot from farm leaders has been largely mixed so far.
Macra welcomed the inclusion of increased hectare allowances for partnerships, as this “will result in increased potential for payments as an important opportunity for young farmers to stake their claim environmentally”. ....

Following a meeting with An Taoiseach Micheal Martin, and Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue, Macra na Feirme has outlined concerns regarding the delays to the planning process overall and the resultant implications which affect young farmers investing in their industry.
Macra na Feirme stress that these delays pose a significant risk to the aims of generational renewal.
The organisation s national president, Thomas Duffy, highlighted the need for investment in facilities to diversify dairy product output in the face of Brexit to protect the long-term viability of rural areas, family farms and the dairy sector. ....

Members of the Worcester Police Department represented 90 of the city’s top 100 earners in 2020, according to payroll records.
City Manager Edward Augustus Jr. took home the highest paycheck, making a total of $279,770 in 2020, keeping on trend with payroll records from previous years. Police Chief Steven Sargent received the city’s second-largest salary, taking home $239,130, records indicate.
Aside from police officers, a handful of other employees are among the highest-paid workers, including the city’s assistant city manager, administrators at the Worcester Public Schools, the city solicitor and the late DPW head. ....

More than a week after the April 6 consolidated election, several tight municipal and school board races in DuPage County are coming down to the wire.
The outcomes of various contests deemed too close to call on election night remain unclear as election authorities continue tabulating late-arriving mail-in and provisional ballots. In Roselle Elementary District 12, an incumbent and a newcomer are tied for the fourth spot on the school board, while a thin margin still separates the two candidates battling for the last open seat on the College of DuPage board as of Wednesday. ....
