May 4, 2021 Katherine Collins has been elected Chair and has appointed Ian McKinnon as Vice-Chair of the Santa Fe Institute’s Board of Trustees. Their three-year appointments began May 3, 2021, following the board’s bi-annual meeting. Katherine Collinsis the first Head of Sustainable Investing at Putnam Investments and Founder of Honeybee Capital, the precursor to Honeybee Capital Foundation. She is also the first woman to chair SFI’s Board of Trustees since the institute’s founding in 1984. Collins first came to SFI in the late 90s through SFI’s Applied Complexity Network. She was a new portfolio manager at Fidelity Investments, a member of the Applied Complexity Network (then known as the “Business Network”) when she attended a meeting on the topic of collective decision-making by honeybees. Insect societies resemble human societies in many ways and are arguably more efficient than ours in some ways. They sustainably harvest environmental resources, engineer their environments both inside and outside their nests, practice agriculture, fight disease with a combination of individual and social immunity, organise social hunting parties, navigate their environment using terrestrial and celestial cues and majorly influence the evolutionary trajectories of other organisms such as flowering plants. ....
Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College (FDLTCC), in partnership with the Northeast Minnesota Beekeepers Association, is hosting a virtual symposium called “Beekeeping and More!” on Saturday, February 13, 2021, for anyone interested in learning about beekeeping as a hobby or as a commercial enterprise. This year’s virtual symposium will run via Zoom. Pre-registration is required as the Zoom links to the day’s presentations will be emailed to registered participants. The first Beekeeping and More! workshop held in 2016 drew more than 150 beekeepers and the event has kept growing, making it one of the largest beekeeping workshops in northern Minnesota. Session topics include equipment, general troubleshooting, beginning beekeeping, hive health, and bee behavior. ....
