Bahraini-British performer Jenna Al-Ansari won for her one-woman political satire Protect & Survive, which was picked out by a panel that included BBC commissioning editor Tanya Qureshi, Channel 4 head of comedy Fiona McDermott and Sky commissioning editor Tilusha Ghelani. Milestone reached as new pilots are announced The BBC has announced four new pilots in its Comedy Slices strand – all led by female talent. With the imminent release of Rose Matefeo’s romcom Starstruck, today’s news means that most comedy programmes on BBC Three are now led by women. The channel claims to be the first in the UK to achieve this landmark with women representing 58 per cent of the key talent involved in long form-scripted comedy writing. The newly announced pilots, which all run for 22 minutes are: Dinosaur: Written by Matilda Curtis and starring stand-up Ashley Storrie as Nina, as autistic woman who finds happiness in the world thanks to her passion for palaeontology and her friendship with her bubbly younger sister Evie. However, when Evie asks Nina to be her maid of honour, Nina decides to step out of her comfort zone with a challenge: to find herself a date to bring to the wedding. ....
New comedy execs and producers at Sky and the BBC Sky and the BBC have both announced new appointments in their comedy commissioning and producing teams. The BBC’s comedy department has appointed I May Destroy You producer Tanya Qureshi as a commissioning editor. She will replace Alex Moody, who is leaving the BBC to join Sky in the same role this summer. Her commissions for the Corporation included Mackenzie Crook’s Worzel Gummidge, King Gary, Motherland, and Frankie Boyle’s New World Order. Meanwhile, Sky has also appointed BBC producer Adnan Ahmed and Katie Churchill, from independent production company Tiger Aspect, to work on the programme-making side. Their remit includes identifying writing and performing talent and working to develop scripted comedies. ....
