Considering the persistent shortage of ambulances and overcharging by drivers amid the raging second coronavirus wave, a group of people from Ambernath in Thane, with the help of
Thane traffic police, has started an auto ambulance service for the residents. Twenty-five
auto drivers have been enrolled for the service, to begin with, and a helpline number has been publicized among residents with the help of social media.
“They approached us with the proposal, and we found it viable and understood the need to take it up at the earliest. The matter was discussed with the Kalyan RTO, and approval was given to convert the auto-rickshaws into ambulances,” said DCP Balsaheb Patil of Thane Traffic Police. ....

Maharashtra: 767 auto drivers fined for violating COVID-19 norms

Thane (Maharashtra) [India], February 21 (ANI): Thane Police booked 767 autorickshaw drivers on Friday and Saturday and collected more than Rs 3,80,000 as a fine from them for violating social distancing norms amid the COVID pandemic.
767 autorickshaw drivers booked on 19th & 20th Feb for violating social distancing norms and carrying more than two passengers in the autorickshaw. More than Rs 3,80,000 collected as fine from offenders, said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Thane Traffic Department.
Earlier, The Mumbai Division of Railways and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had fined 4618 train passengers between February 1 to 14 for not wearing face masks, a mandatory health protocol to be followed amid the COVID-19 pandemic. ....

Mumbai reported 897 new COVID-19 cases, 571 recoveries, and three deaths, as per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday. The total cases in the city increased to 3,18,207 including 6,900 active cases and 2,99,206 total recoveries. The total fatalities now stand at 51,753 including the new deaths.Amid the rise in COVID-19 cases in the city, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar has said that ward officials with their teams will monitor the COVID situation in their areas and action will be taken against those not following SOPs. TMC commissioner and Thane Traffic police commissioner, Balasaheb Patil and others meet on Friday.
Thane: Citizens may soon be allotted with more parking space in Thane. The announcement on the same was recently done by the TMC chief Dr Vipin Sharma, in coordination with Thane traffic police department.
The issue was highlighted in the meeting held between TMC commissioner and Thane Traffic police commissioner, Balasaheb Patil and along with other traffic officials, on Friday.
The civic officials including assistant commissioners and executive engineers have been directed to carry out survey to list out open space within the city in order to provide pay and parking system for citizens, said a TMC official. ....
