I was glad to see the opinion piece about earthquake preparedness (“Because disasters don’t wait, our earthquake preparation can’t either,” Jan. 24), but there is an immediate threat to our state’s ability to identify and analyze natural hazards. Gov. Kate Brown’s proposed budget would get rid of the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries and divide up some of its functions among other departments. I don’t think she realizes the important work this agency has done (and on a shoestring budget, I might add) and has yet to do in Oregon. To name just a few, the agency has mapped important geologic features, critical for knowledge of our water resources and mineral resources. It has identified and mapped natural hazards, including earthquake faults and potential shaking, tsunami runup zones, landslide hazards and volcanic hazards. UNION MEMBERS GET DIBS ON VACCINES: As Portland-area public health officials warned Jan. 26 it could still take months to vaccinate Oregonians in the state s top priority group for shots, Oregon Health & Science University launched a drive-thru vaccination clinic at Portland International Airport.
