Mineral Daily News-Tribune KEYSER - Students at the Mineral County Technical Center have traditionally studied subjects like carpentry, mechanics, agriculture and nursing - all of which require much hands-on practice. Starting this year, some of the students will be gaining hands-on experience in art, thanks to a cooperative program between the Tech Center, Highland Arts Unlimited, and the art teachers at Keyser and Frankfort high schools. Highland Arts, which sponsors the mural program that has resulted in artwork being placed on the amphitheater in Brooks Park and the front of the Law Building, and the one currently being painted on the side of Solar Mountain Records, has expanded that program to include several murals to be placed on the outside walls of the Tech Center. ....
Mineral Daily News-Tribune KEYSER - A need for some updated equipment at Keyser’s playgrounds has translated into an opportunity for students in the carpentry class at the Mineral County Technical Center. All it took was a conversation between Keyser parks and recreation commissioner Ron Metcalf and carpentry instructor Richard “Steve” Willison, and the wheels were set in motion for the Tech Center’s students to construct two tabletop chair combos, two benches, and four picnic tables to be placed at the city’s parks, including the John R. Shelton Swimming Pool. “It took us about a week to complete the project, and I feel the city is getting some high-quality furniture made of solid 2x4s, which should last the city for years,” Willison said. ....
Mineral FFA Team tops at W.Va. Envirothon From News Reports ROANOKE, W.Va. The Mineral County Future Farmers of America (FFA) team won the 2021 West Virginia Envirothon, and were named as this year’s winners during an awards ceremony that was hosted recently at Stonewall Resort and reached teams throughout the state virtually. Mineral’s team of five high school students competed against nine other teams to win this year’s event, which is the state’s premiere conservation competition for high school students. Led by Mineral County FFA Adviser Julie Sions, the team includes students John Bittinger, Lara Bittinger, Rachael Brinkman, Robby Moncrief and Sarah Sions. ....
KHS announces 2021 Kelley nominees Liz Beavers Tribune Managing Editor KEYSER - Keyser High School has announced the three nominees for the 2021 Jonah Edward Kelley Award - Draetius Marcell Allen, Darrick Harmon Broadwater and Bradley Ryan Sommers. The Kelley Award is named in memory of Keyser High School graduate Jonah Edward Kelley, who lost his life while defending his men during an ambush near Kesternich, Germany, during World War II. Kelley was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions. Nominees for the award are three young men who have excelled academically and athletically, and have demonstrated integrity, dignity, and honor throughout their high school careers. Nominees must also have played either football or basketball - the two sports which Kelley played while a student at Keyser. ....
