Yet another canola crusher planned for Saskatchewan

Article content
Saskatchewan’s streak of landing canola crush investments continued on Tuesday, as a fourth company announced plans for a multi-million-dollar project in the province.
Minnesota-based Ceres Global Ag announced a $350 million integrated canola crush facility slated for Northgate, near the U.S. border in southeast Saskatchewan. It will have capacity to crush 1.1 million metric tonnes of canola annually, and refine 500,000 metric tonnes into oil for food and fuel. Ceres estimates it will create more than 50 full-time jobs in the province.

Ombudsman flooded with COVID-related complaints last year

Article content
Saskatchewan’s ombudsman fielded 477 complaints related to COVID-19 last year, as the government coped with a steep learning curve that left inmates, social service clients and many others unsatisfied.
That was 14 per cent of the 3,415 complaints the ombudsman, Mary McFadyen, received over the course of 2020. In her annual report released Thursday, she noted that complaints about long-term care homes and correctional facilities were both up, partly due to a sizeable share of pandemic-related complaints.

Cargill to build $350M canola crusher in Regina area

Article content
Cargill is planning to spend $350 million to build a canola crusher in the Regina area, an investment expected to create 50 full-time jobs and process one million metric tonnes of seed each year.
The American agri-food company announced the plan on Thursday, though it hasn’t yet chosen a site. It expects to begin construction early next year, with the facility in operation by early 2024. In an interview, Cargill president Jeff Vassart said the crusher will be located within an hour of the city, but without encroaching too close on residential neighbourhoods.
