Birding with Don Reimer: Owls and Winter— - Free Press Online

Owls and Winter—

With return of neo-tropical spring birds still weeks away, there are other species to fill the natural void. Owls are a worthy example, now being seen and heard in relatively strong numbers throughout coastal Maine. Snowy owls are reported at traditional winter stopovers, such as Portland’s Jetport, Biddeford Pool and Bar Harbor. Several closer locales, including Clarry Hill, Beech Hill and Pemaquid Point, have hosted these spectacular white bird ss too.
A birding friend recently reported a pair of great horned owls hooting near his home. For this large, sturdy species, January is the start of their annual nesting season. Since the great horned isn’t a nest builder, it often uses the vacant nest structures of other large birds eagles, ospreys, red-tailed hawks, great blue herons or crows. Incubation begins with the first egg to keep them viable and shield them from freezing temperatures. In following ....

Enthusiasm for birding, nature-watching increases, as pandemic surges

As for binoculars they are helpful but not mandatory, Reimer noted, though Aversa pointed out binoculars can be handy since you never know what bird you could see when least expecting.
“It is difficult to appreciate the subtle beauty of birds without being able to see them up close,” said Aversa.
There are numerous options for less than $100, Doiron noted. Reimer said many lean towards the 7x power binoculars, while Lindquist recommends 8x30 or 8x40 power binoculars.
More important than the assistance of guides and binoculars, however, is simply using your eyes and ears.
“Start by looking at what’s out your window, in your backyard, or on your feeder, and go from there,” said Lindquist. “Visit the harbor and see what s paddling around in the winter. Take a hike in the state park or in one of the dozens of nature preserves this area is blessed with. Keep your eyes and ears open, find a bird, and really focus on observing it.”  ....

Frisco officials are hopeful that reaching back out to the development community could finally provide an answer for the long-vacant Sabatini lot on Granite Street.
Town officials discussed different options for the lot during a virtual Frisco Town Council meeting last week and ultimately decided to push out a request for proposals in search of a new housing development on the parcel.
The Sabatini lot is a half-block plot between Second and Third avenues at 275 Granite St., which has remained vacant since the town purchased the land in 1997. Last year, local developer Nathan Glassman pitched the town on a potential public-private partnership that would combine the town-owned Sabatini lot with the adjacent property to create a larger-scale housing project at the site. ....
