David Sedaris, Gloria Steinem contribute to Frommer's travel guide

Sixteen notable writers have created a combined list of places that they believe helped shape and define America, from coastal Oregon and Solvang, California, to Ellis Island and New Hampshire’s Black Heritage Trail.
The resulting collection of mini-essays, including contributions from memoirist Cheryl Strayed, novelist Jodi Picoult, humorist David Sedaris and activist Gloria Steinem, was organized by Frommer’s, the travel guidebook company. The collection can be read for free online.
The compilation is designed to be food for thought rather than an invitation to hit the road.
With COVID-19 cases surging in many parts of the country, “we don’t want people to use these essays as the basis for travel until doing so is safe once again,” Pauline Frommer, who heads the guidebook company, told the AP. “We hope this list will be a spur to future travel, but we also just wanted it to be great reading right now.” ....

SANTA FE – It’s been six months since Santa Fe Mayor Alan Webber publicly declared that a committee would be formed to address controversial monuments and long-standing racial tensions in the City Different. But Wednesday, city councilors voted to delay that process a little further.
And the panel that will generate recommendations for city officials will look very different from its original description, with Santa Fe leaders using a committee similar to one used in Albuquerque as a model.
Originally, the Committee on Healing, Art, Reconciliation and Truth (CHART) was proposed as a 21-member board made up of city-appointed community members who would create a set of recommendations by the end of 2022. ....

The Santa Fe City Council decided Wednesday night to delay voting on a proposal to create a new committee that would address the controversial removal of a monument honoring a historical figure and other tensions that culminated in the October toppling of the Plaza obelisk.
Mayor Alan Webber and City Councilors Roman âTigerâ Abeyta, Carol Romero-Wirth and Chris Rivera announced Tuesday a significant change to the proposed committee that would eliminate an appointed board and replace it with a format based on a similar committee Albuquerqueâs city government has used. That includes one-on-one interviews with residents, questionnaires and three roundtable meetings open to the public. ....

Mayor Alan Webber and three city councilors are sponsoring a significant change to a proposed committee that would address the controversial removal of a monument honoring a historical figure and other tensions stemming from the October toppling of the Plaza obelisk.
In a news release issued Tuesday night, Webber and City Councilors Roman âTigerâ Abeyta, Carol Romero-Wirth and Chris Rivera said they will propose a substitute resolution to create a Culture, History, Arts, Reconciliation and Truth Committee that would eliminate an appointed board and replace it with a format based on a template used in Albuquerque. That approach includes one-on-one interviews with residents, questionnaires and three roundtable meetings open to the public. ....
