Slog AM: Air Raids Kill 26 in Gaza, KUOW Drops Funny Durkan Texts, Cops Find the Suspect but Not the Tiger He Fled With

KUOW dropped some Durkan texts: The public radio station s story confirms a report from the
Seattle Times about the city s public records office recreating missing texts to and from Mayor Jenny Durkan during the protests and the rise of CHOP last summer. Those texts appear to come from group chats the Mayor had with staffers, and they re pre-ttay, pre-ttay, pre-ttaaaaaaaaay funny.

Topaz and
Seize. His work considers what it is to be othered in America, historically and personally. The backdrops are the legacy of the Japanese internment camp era, the impact of anti-Asian bigotry, and the experience of raising a child with a disability.
Komei Dempster is the editor of
From Our Side of the Fence: Growing Up in America’s Concentration Camps and
Making Home from War: Stories of Japanese American Exile and Resettlement.
It sounds paradoxical to call Seize an epic when it focuses on the individual, the everyday, the familiar and has a central figure who was diagnosed as “retarded, abnormal, impaired,” who hardly speaks, and who is greatly dependent on others. And yet that is the scale, importance, and achievement of Brian Kom ....

SEATTLE Shin Yu Pai is an award-winning writer who finds ways to extend her work into other realms by creating poetry-based objects, like photographs printed on leaves and poems hand-stitched on cloth.
Since March, she s seen the surge in hate crimes against Asian Americans, and how those painful experiences have, at times, sparked something powerful.
I do feel like there is a rise at this moment in Asian American voices and stories, women s voices, women writers claiming their experiences, Pai said. ....

Green tips of tulips are rising out of the earth—
you don’t flense a whale or fire at beer cans
