Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - A glacially dammed lake above the Taku Inlet is compounding the already-existing flood warning for the Taku River as the water drains into the waterway. The lake, called Lake No Lake, has been closely watched by the National Weather Service over the past several days, according to meteorologist Nicole Ferrin in an interview with News of the North. This is the typical time of year where [a release] could happen, she said. We got helicopter confirmation from Canadians that the lake has indeed drained into the Take River area. This type of draining event from a glacially-dammed lake is called a jökulhlaup in Icelandic. Jökulhlaups also happen in the Mendenhall Valley when Suicide Basin drains, often causing the West Glacier Trail area to flood. ....
JUNEAU, Alaska – Coast Guard personnel partnered with Border Patrol agents near Southeast Alaska and the Canadian border, November 17-18, 2020 as a joint interagency effort to enforce border security, motor vessel safety and educate vessel operators on border crossing requirements. A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak HC-130J Super Hercules crew provided logistical support by transporting Border Patrol agents and equipment from Anchorage to Juneau. A Coast Guard Air Station Sitka MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew provided an overflight, identifying vessels of interest for Border Patrol agents and Coast Guard law enforcement crews aboard a Coast Guard Station Juneau 45-foot Response Boat-Medium. ....

Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak provided an HC-130J Super Hercules crew. Coast Guard Air Station Sitka provided an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter. Coast Guard Sector Juneau provided a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium. The crews completed four joint boardings. They advised the vessels about safety, and the rules currently in effect for the US-Canadian border, and specifically the Taku Inlet. For instance, vessels are required to submit the proper Notice of Arrival information in accordance with federal regulations when they arrive from a foreign port. ....
