INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, it has never been more important for people to get outside and away from their screens. Spending time in nature has been shown to have countless health benefits. It can reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness, even while socially-distancing. Interaction with wild animals in their own habitat can boost one’s mood and decrease physical symptoms of stress, such as fatigue or difficulty sleeping. Some health care providers specifically encourage the pursuit of observing animals in nature for patients suffering from anxiety and depression. There’s one activity that brings all of those health benefits together, and best of all, it’s free and fun for all ages: birding. ....

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. The Tahoe Institute for Natural Science and Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care are asking the public to be on the lookout for sick or dead finches associated with bird feeders.
Finches across the western states are dying from an outbreak of salmonellosis, a common and often fatal bird disease caused by the salmonella bacteria. The problem appears to be especially bad along coastal Northern California, Oregon, and Washington, with reports of many sick and dying birds. Most affected by salmonellosis are Pine Siskins, but Lesser Goldfinch and other finch species can fall victim to salmonellosis as well. In recent weeks, dead siskins have also been found in backyards in the Carson Valley and Truckee. ....

As President Joe Biden calls for a 100-day mask challenge, a new report finds the majority of U.S. adults still don’t wear face masks consistently.
The new analysis found about 9 in 10 U.S. adults believe masks do protect them from COVID-19, but it also found half of them aren’t wearing one consistently when they socialize with people outside their household.
“People are making their own decision about their risk tolerance, which I don’t really know that we can do too much about, said Sean McCrea, a psychology professor at the University of Wyoming.
McCrea compares wearing a mask voluntarily to practicing safe sex or choosing not to drink alcohol. So what will it take to change this behavior? Jackie Chen is a social psychology professor at the University of Utah. She said the best way is to set the example. ....
