The constitutional session limit is three days away, and an operating budget has yet to be passed by the legislature. But the legislature need not worry as Governor
Mike Dunleavy (R – Alaska) issued proclamations for two special sessions – one starting on Thursday and one starting on August 2. Several legislators and staff have been moving around Juneau as many leases have expired. I am back home, at the Driftwood! As more ballots have been counted in the Anchorage mayoral runoff,
Dave Bronson has increased his lead over
Forrest Dunbar. ....

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! The constitutional session limit is just ten days away, and there is no end in sight. Legislative skits happened this weekend. Great job to all the staff who put them on. Not only were they really funny, it was the first time things felt completely normal. I attended both nights, hence the late column today. The Anchorage mayoral runoff election concludes on Tuesday. The new mayor’s term will begin on July 1.

The Sunday Minefield – April 18, 2021
Tomorrow is the 90th day of session (statutory limit) and the legislature is nowhere near passing a budget. It looks like they will be going to day 121 (constitutional limit) and maybe even beyond that. On a positive note, spring has finally seemed to have arrived in Juneau. Today was sunny and in the 60s. But where I am it’s in the 90s! I dipped down to Palm Springs for the weekend on a little operation. Big shout out to Alaska Airlines for those amazing deals!

Dunbar unsuccessfully challenged Congressman
Don Young (R – Alaska) in 2014 and has twice been elected to the Anchorage Assembly. While
Falsey got a lot of media attention as city manager during the 2018 earthquake and Covid, his ties to former Mayor
Ethan Berkowitz do not help.
Martinez, who also worked for
Berkowitz, is essentially an unknown in the race.
Now the conservatives.
Mike Robbins has raised the most, over $280,000. Although a significant portion of that is his own money. This includes a recent $25,000 campaign contribution on March 26, which violates campaign laws. Candidates can only give themselves up to $5,000 30 days before the election. ....

It’s stupid daylight savings again. I really wish Congress would just end it once and for all for the entire country. God forbid they do something the majority of Americans agree on. Things in the Capitol were loose as ever this week. We are nearly two thirds into the “90-day” legislative session. The end appears to be nowhere in sight.
