A privately funded mission has found, surveyed and filmed the USS Johnston, the world’s deepest known shipwreck, offshore Samar Island in the Philippines Sea.
The expedition was backed by Victor Vescovo, is an entrepreneur, explorer and retired U.S. Navy Commander who personally piloted his submersible DSV Limiting Factor down to the wreck during two separate, eight-hour dives 21,180 feet (6,456 meters) below the ocean s surface. These constituted the deepest wreck dives, manned or unmanned, in history.

Deepest ever shipwreck explored by team in submarine

Three other ships that sank in the Battle of Leyte Gulf are yet to be found.
The USS Johnston was located in water 62 per cent deeper than where the famous RMS Titanic was found in the North Atlantic.
The Johnston was also a much smaller ship, making it extremely difficult to locate and was just five per cent of the overall size of the Titanic.

U.S. Navy Commander Ernest Evans suffered shrapnel wounds and some of his fingers were blown off when his ship was hit by enemy shellfire.
But he and his crew onboard the USS Johnston kept fighting.
The day was Oct. 25, 1944. Evans and his men among a handful of U.S. ships, outnumbered by Japanese naval forces, were protecting American troops invading the Philippine Islands during the Battle off Samar, one of the most significant naval conflicts in World War II.
Even after the Fletcher-class destroyer was severely damaged, Evans and his crew kept fighting. Even after dozens of his men were killed, they persisted. ....
