Georgia's Second Largest School District Bans Critical Race Theory Lessons

The Cobb County, Georgia, school board banned Critical Race Theory (CRT) lessons Thursday from classrooms.
The district, which has about 110,000 students and is the state’s second largest, blocked lessons on “systemic” racism after board Chairman Randy Scamihorn “said he brought up the topic because educators allegedly said on social media they were using part of the theory in their classroom discussions,” the
Atlanta Journal-Constitutionreported.
“It’s revisionist history and history should be thorough,” Scamihorn said, adding CRT “is a Marxist concept that pits one group of people against another.”
According to the paper, the board’s four Republicans all voted in favor of the ban while the three Democrats abstained from voting on the resolution. ....

Georgia BOE with Gov. Brian Kemp in opposing 'critical race theory'

ATLANTA The state Board of Education voted Thursday to essentially endorse Gov. Brian Kemp’s opposition to teaching “critical race theory” in Georgia schools, despite criticism it would muzzle open discussion of America’s history of racism.
A resolution board members passed 11-2 declares the board’s belief that the United States “is not a racist country, and that the state of Georgia is not a racist state.”
The five-page resolution goes on to oppose any use of public education resources to “indoctrinate” students in any political ideology or theory or accepting either federal or private funding that require teaching that anyone is inherently racist or inherently a victim of racism. ....

Georgia schools gain option to gut year-end tests amid COVID-19 pandemic

Georgia K-12 public schools have the option not to count year-end tests toward students’ final grades this year due to schooling hardships from the COVID-19 pandemic following a vote Monday by the state Board of Education.
State law requires scores on the annual Georgia Milestones tests to account for 20% of the cumulative grades for most of the state’s public-school students, from the third grade up to their senior year.
But this year, the Milestones scores can be counted essentially zero after State School Superintendent Richard Woods won approval for his proposal to water down the tests so students and teachers can have some relief as they continue working through tremendous challenges due to the virus. ....
