Union claims 'huge win' as court approves arbitration for MGEU contract

The Manitoba Court of Appeal has ruled the province has no right to block the negotiations with civil servants from going to an arbitrator.
Justice Freda M. Steel in her ruling said the province was “unreasonable” in refusing the negotiations to proceed to binding arbitration.

The Manitoba Government and General Employees Union and the 12,000 civil servants they represent have been without a contract since March 2019.
“This is a huge win for our members and it’s sad and unfortunate that we actually had to go to court in the first place, never mind go to court a second time for an appeal for something that is actually within an act of government,” said Michelle Gawronsky, president of MGEU. ....

Opposition critics were out in full force following the release of a KPMG review of the Early Learning Child-Care Transformation at the Manitoba Legislature.
The report was released on Monday afternoon and outlined 10 recommendations for the overhaul of the sector, four of which were on funding, including one which recommends going to an income-tested parent fee funding model.
