Resident survey, documents paint different picture Posted David Colburn COOK- When complaints and allegations about Cook Housing and Rehabilitation Authority Executive Director Reed Erickson were aired by four disgruntled tenants at the May 27 meeting of the Cook City Council, Erickson wasn’t there to respond. However, Erickson and Housing Manager Paula Erickson agreed to meet with the Timberjay recently to share their reactions to some of the major issues raised at the council meeting. The issues were all familiar to the Ericksons – whether at board meetings or city council or in communications with local media and government officials, a small group of individuals have been voicing their complaints for more than a year. The Ericksons have responded before, with no success in quelling the tenants’ discontent. ....

A year after the COVID-19 pandemic led to record-high joblessness, the San Antonio area’s unemployment rate continued to decline in April even as the pace of job growth slowed. The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas on Friday pegged the area’s unemployment rate at 6 percent for April, down from March’s 6.3 percent. April joblessness was still twice the pre-pandemic rate of 3 percent recorded in February 2020. However, it was significantly less than the peak unemployment rate of 14.1 percent, a record high reached in April 2020. ....
Staff Report Wilkes County Board members present a check for $1 million to support the Wilkes Community College Education Promise scholarship program. The Wilkes County Board of Commissioners has provided a $1 million check to Wilkes Community College Foundation to invest in the new Wilkes Community College (WCC) Education Promise. The Education Promise is a last-dollar scholarship to Wilkes Community College designed to ensure all graduating seniors in Wilkes County can attend WCC tuition-free for two years. “The Wilkes County Board of Commissioners is proud to invest in this critical initiative,” said Chairman Eddie Settle. “The data shows that access to higher education can improve the lives of our residents in many ways, including options for better jobs that lead to higher incomes, better health and higher job satisfaction.” ....
