Garfield County commissioners want city to address traffic concerns when considering West Glenwood pasture annexation

Garfield County staff provided an impact analysis on the proposed annexation of 15 acres in West Glenwood during Monday’s county commissioners meeting, highlighting concerns about additional traffic congestion.
Wyatt Keesbery, Garfield County Road and Bridge Director, said that he would like to see the city annex and take ownership of Donegan Road, Storm King Road and Mel Ray Road, the three roadways that surround the proposed development site.
“I think this would be a great opportunity for the city of Glenwood Springs to take on all of West Glenwood,” Keesbery said.
“Right now there’s very limited use basically just West Glenwood uses those roads.” ....

Fireworks sales likely to be added to year-round ban in Garfield County, but not until next year

Garfield County appears to have the second vote needed among county commissioners, and possibly even a third, to ban fireworks sales going forward.
However, there’s not enough time to enact such a ban to go along with the county’s prohibition on the personal use of fireworks for this summer.
To proceed this year, under state law, the county would have to draw up an ordinance, subject to two separate hearings before the county commissioners, plus a 30-day public notice period before it would take effect, County Attorney Tari Williams advised during the June 21 Board of County Commissioners meeting. ....

Garfield County commissioners are offering their unanimous support for two pieces of legislation and a petition for a hearing on a third being put forth by Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo.
The Board of County Commissioners on Monday signed letters of support for Boebert’s bill seeking to halt President Joe Biden’s 30×30 climate action plan.
Called the “30×30 Termination Act,” and referring to the Biden plan as a “land grab,” the Rifle Republican and freshman 3rd Congressional District representative is trying to build support
in the House to stop the effort.
In addition, commissioners on Monday also agreed to sign letters in support of Boebert’s alternative American Infrastructure Modernization (AIM) Act ....

GarCo Dems want commissioners off county health board

The Garfield County Democratic Party has endorsed a bill making its way through the Colorado Legislature that would remove elected county commissioners from the statutorily required local public health board.
But the three Republican county commissioners say they intend to continue serving in their roles on the Garfield County Board of Health.
The health board takes advice from and gives direction to the county’s Department of Public Health, and decides certain policy matters, especially when it comes to spending.
County-level health boards have become crucial during the past year in the COVID-19 pandemic response.
Many, including those in neighboring Pitkin and Mesa counties, have relied heavily on medical experts and institutional representatives in helping to make those decisions, county Democrats pointed out in a recently issued press release. ....
