Berkshire organizations based or doing business in the county have now snagged $20.9 million out of $215 million awarded statewide.
âThe money will be put to good use,â said Allyn Burrows, artistic director of Shakespeare & Company. He pointed out that the funds are allocated to the troupeâs current annual budget, a decision made âin hopeful anticipationâ of winning a grant.
The Roomful of Teeth Vocal Arts Project won a talent rep award of $219,362. The vocal ensemble founded in Williamstown by Brad Wells in 2009 and still based there has performed annually at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams. Wells is Director of choral/vocal activities and artist-in-residence at Williams College.
This time, itâs the weather.
âThe rain is having a tremendous impact on our outdoor festival,â said Nicole Tomasofky, director of marketing and communications at Jacobâs Pillow Dance Festival. Persistent rainfall forced the Pillow to cancel 10 out of its 20 performances â with refunds to patrons â within the first two weeks of its outdoor-only summer season.
Other outdoor work is a struggle.
âWhen itâs wet, we canât,â said Tom Zanconato, owner of Zanconato Paving & Sealcoating in Pittsfield.
âYou should not sealcoat or crack seal when itâs raining.â
But, the soggy weather can be a boon for some.

I think that we as arts organizations are back with this kind of ferocity because we know we have a responsibility to make space for that, for artists, for audiences, for people who have to reconnect with what it means to be alive, she said. This is a part of human health and well-being, we have to be back this summer, we have to continue to tear a path forward and we have to do it for as broad and diverse of a community of both artists and audiences as we can all push ourselves to do.
Jacob’s Pillow announces performers for 2021 summer dance festival

World-renowned dancers will return to the stage for live performances this summer at Jacob’s Pillow, which recently announced its full list of performers for the 2021 summer festival.
Due to the on-going worldwide pandemic, all of the performances will take place outside with reduced audience capacity. All of the performances will also be available for viewing online.
This is the first summer festival at Jacob’s Pillow to feature both onsite and online programming. Onsite events run June 30-August 29, with online streaming through September 23.
