Shakespeare & Co., Beacon Cinema, vocal project land total of $1.56 million in pandemic relief

By Clarence Fanto, Eagle correspondent Berkshire organizations based or doing business in the county have now snagged $20.9 million out of $215 million awarded statewide. “The money will be put to good use,” said Allyn Burrows, artistic director of Shakespeare & Company. He pointed out that the funds are allocated to the troupe’s current annual budget, a decision made “in hopeful anticipation” of winning a grant. The Roomful of Teeth Vocal Arts Project won a talent rep award of $219,362. The vocal ensemble founded in Williamstown by Brad Wells in 2009 and still based there has performed annually at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams. Wells is Director of choral/vocal activities and artist-in-residence at Williams College.

With all this rain, Mother Nature has left some Berkshire businesses high, dry (but some benefit)

This time, it’s the weather. “The rain is having a tremendous impact on our outdoor festival,” said Nicole Tomasofky, director of marketing and communications at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. Persistent rainfall forced the Pillow to cancel 10 out of its 20 performances — with refunds to patrons — within the first two weeks of its outdoor-only summer season. Other outdoor work is a struggle. “When it’s wet, we can’t,” said Tom Zanconato, owner of Zanconato Paving & Sealcoating in Pittsfield. “You should not sealcoat or crack seal when it’s raining.” But, the soggy weather can be a boon for some.

Local Artistic Directors Look Forward to Summer 2021

Artistic Directors Mandy Greenfield of Williamstown Theatre Festival, Kate Maguire of Berkshire Theatre Group Kate and Julianne Boyd of Barrington Stage Company; Alexandra Fuchs, chief operating officer of the Boston Symphony Orchestra; and Pamela Tatge, director of Jacob s Pillow Dance, joined 1Berkshire CEO Jonathan Butler for a virtual town hall on Friday.     I think that we as arts organizations are back with this kind of ferocity because we know we have a responsibility to make space for that, for artists, for audiences, for people who have to reconnect with what it means to be alive, she said. This is a part of human health and well-being, we have to be back this summer, we have to continue to tear a path forward and we have to do it for as broad and diverse of a community of both artists and audiences as we can all push ourselves to do.
