JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After months of delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, jury trials in Duval County began again this week.
The courthouse closed last March when most public functions went into lockdown. They resumed with extra precautions in early October when the COVID-19 spread seemed to be moderating. In November, three felony jury trials were delayed after court officials found out during jury selection that two defendants and a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office worker set to testify tested positive for COVID-19. Jurors were sent home and some attorneys quarantined as a result. ....

3:45 p.m. | Florida COVID-19 cases surpass 1.5 million; 5 new deaths in Northeast Florida
The Florida Department of Health added 161 more deaths in Tuesday s report on the coronavirus pandemic, as the state s cumulative case count surged past the 1.5 million mark.
The statewide death toll increased to 23,585, including 23,227 residents of Florida, with five newly-recorded COVID-19 fatalities in Northeast Florida: two in Duval County, and one each in Baker, Clay and Nassau counties.
In all, the health department has tabulated 1,503,482 positive tests for the novel coronavirus during the past year. Tuesday marked 10 months since the virus began to prompt large-scale closures of venues and events across Northeast Florida, including The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach. | Read more ....

After months of struggling to regain some semblance of ordinary courthouse functions, the Chief Judge of the 4th Judicial Circuit acknowledged it is time to retrench.
In a Jan. 6 email to top officials in the courts and criminal justice system, Chief Judge Mark Mahon said virtually all in person courthouse functions will be suspended until Feb. 22. Mahon stopped short of officially returning to Phase 1 Covid protocols, but his email directive is materially identical to the Florida Supreme Court s definition of Phase 1.
Mahon’s order suspends all in person proceedings without his express permission. It suspends all prisoner transports and jury trial until Feb. 22, without exception. ....
