PRESTO TOWNSHIP (KDKA) Former Pennsylvania Supreme Court Chief Justice Stephen A. Zappala Sr. passed away on Friday.
“I was saddened to hear of the death of former Chief Justice Stephen A. Zappala Sr. His distinguished legal career, and interest in public service, benefitted our community. He served as solicitor to the county’s Authority for Improvements in Municipalities (AIM) before joining the Court of Common Pleas, then the PA Supreme Court before assuming the role of Chief Justice,” said County Executive Rich Fitzgerald in a statement. “His dedication to the legal profession coupled with community service can be seen in his son, our District Attorney Stephen A. Theatre Review: 'Virtual Mock Trial' presented by Shakespeare Theatre Company

This is the 35th year the “Mock Trial” has been presented and, like last year, it is virtual. In keeping with the Shakespeare Theatre Company and the STC’s Bard Association, it is a delightful confluence of Shakespeare, lawyerly wit, and timely barbs focused on the news of the day. This year did not disappoint.
The arguments were made with brio and wit. The judges asked searching questions and kept the lawyers on their toes and it was seamlessly done. For once, everyone was glad that nobody followed Shakespeare’s dictum to “…kill all the lawyers.” Because they slayed! ....

Senator Hanson-Young's defamation win reminds us how the law can silence sexual slurs and raise survivors' voices


Former senator David Leyonhjelm today lost his appeal against a defamation ruling and must pay A$120,000 compensation to Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young for his comments that she should “stop shagging men”.
“It is hard and difficult to do,” said Senator Hanson-Young of the proceedings. “But by supporting the women who dare to speak up, we are supporting the rights of women and girls to be respected, everywhere.”
Women have long fought to silence rumours told about them, and to exercise agency over their own narratives and experiences.
Depending on cultural and historical context, the law has worked and continues to work to either hinder or help this process. ....
