Former Chief Justice David Maraga passed down pieces of advice to his successor Martha Koome who assumed the office on Monday, May 24.
Speaking during the ceremony held at Supreme Court grounds, Maraga reminded Koome that the office was very demanding and that she should tackle it with grace.
He further noted that she should always endeavor to cooperate with other judges and her counsel to make her reign at the office smooth.
One thing I tell you is that you go to a very demanding office. Extremely demanding but you are up to it. I know you, you are a very prayerful woman. ....

Justice Martha Koome is on the verge of becoming the first female Chief Justice of Kenya. This is if members of the National Assembly approve a report by the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) that vetted her last week recommending her appointment as CJ.
Speaker Justin Muturi has convened a special sitting today for MPs to either approve or reject her nomination.
Sources within the committee chaired by Muturi Kigano confided to The Standard of a unanimous approval of Justice Koome in what now puts her a heartbeat away from succeeding former Chief Justice David Maraga. ....

The Head of State gazetted the appointment of Koome hours after MPs unanimously approved her nomination during a special sitting convened by Speaker Justin Muturi.
“In the exercise of powers conferred by Article 166 (1) (a) of the Constitution, I, Uhuru Kenyatta, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, appoints Martha Karambu Koome to be the Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya,” read the gazette notice. ....

Under the 2010 constitution, Kenya had five years to enact laws ensuring no more than two-thirds of members of elective public bodies are of the same gender.
And on Wednesday, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) argued the August House cannot escape the wrath of the law for its failure.
LSK president Nelson Havi, in his submissions before a five-judge bench, was of the view that Covid-19 cannot stop the country from conducting by-elections once the President sends the MPs home.
“Failure by Parliament to enact two-third gender rule invited a Constitutional penal consequence of dissolution. The significance of this penal consequence was underscored by the Court of Appeal. Covid-19 cannot be a reason why we should not dissolve parliament,” said Havi. ....
