Mr Tabu Butagira has been appointed Managing Editor of Nation Media Group Uganda (NMG-U) as part of a re-organisation of the company’s editorial department.
Mr Butagira will in the new role oversee the day-to-day editorial operations of all NMG-U platforms, including Daily Monitor newspaper, NTV Uganda, Spark TV, and KFM, among others.
In a communication announcing the changes, the NMG-U General Manager Editorial, Mr Daniel Kalinaki, said: “…as we continue developing a paid for-content business, it is necessary to keep converging our operations to allow us use our resources more effectively and respond to changing audience needs.” ....

This talent apparently runs in the family, as his younger brother, Robert Otani, got out of Ochieng’s shadow to stand his own ground as a sub-editor.

He appreciated talent and was respectful. Ironically, he was a soft-spoken gentleman behind the hard-hitting articles that many remember vividly.
As impeccable as his writing was, Ochieng was also a sharp dresser. He wore expensive three-piece suits. The waistcoat was ubiquitous when he was in the office.

Philip Ochieng, the veteran journalist, who died on Tuesday evening, was a meticulous professional. He had an amazing grasp of the English language and enjoyed getting to the roots and origins of English words in French, German, Latin and even Dholuo. He was obsessed with the dissemination of knowledge, drawing from the rich classical times to the present. Philip Ochieng - a veteran editor, columnist and author - passed away on Tuesday, April 27 while undergoing treatment at the Ombo Mission Hospital in Migori County. 
The 83-year-old s death was announced by his family who divulged that he succumbed to pneumonia. 
Ochieng, a renowned journalist served as a columnist and editor for the Nation Media Group and was once a columnist for the
Standard.

Ochieng rose to the top despite dropping out of college in the United States. The prolific wordsmith was one of the privileged students to be airlifted to the US in 1959 but never completed his studies as he opted to return back home.  ....
