It has been almost a year now that COVID-19 has disrupted so much of our lives. Sleep has been elusive for many. Thinking, worrying, over-thinking, stress, and isolation are just some things that cause sleepless nights. There are then two choices: stay awake or find strategies to fall asleep. One strategy that our family has tried is W̱ЌEL, W̱,ЌELIWENS which means “sleep meditation.” I have noticed that all of our sleep meditation options are in the English language. What I wanted to do for our children who attend ȽÁU, WELṈEW̱ Tribal School, located near Brentwood Bay and on W̱JOȽEȽP (Tsartlip) territory in W̱SÁNEĆ, was to create a sleep meditation in SENĆOŦEN, which is the name of our language.  ....

For a burgeoning underclass of marginalized indigenous youth, legislation to implement the U.N.’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) is a death sentence. They live in squalor in remote settlements and urban slums. Here’s a statement from the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples’ 1995 report on suicide, “Choosing Life”:
“Aboriginal youth described both exclusion from the dominant society and alienation from the now-idealized but once-real “life on the land” that is stereotypically associated with aboriginality. The terrible emptiness of feeling strung between two cultures and psychologically at home in neither has been described … in testimony given before the Commission.
