New unit to respond to mental health, substance abuses crises in Santa Fe

SANTA FE, N.M.- The City of Santa Fe is changing the way it responds to people suffering from a mental health or substance abuse crisis.
During a news conference Monday, Mayor Alan Webber announced the city s new Alternative Response Unit.
It will consist of a police officer, a paramedic and a social worker trained in crisis intervention.
“It s an awareness that there are people in our community who have behavioral health needs, mental health needs, social issues, that really don t rise to the level of being a matter of law enforcement. They re a matter of public health,” said Webber. ....

SANTA FE – A former Santa Fe Police Department lieutenant contends in a lawsuit that she was forced into retirement after repeatedly being retaliated against by the city of Santa Fe because she reported time card fraud and evidence room violations to supervisors.
Michele Williams, who retired late last year, filed a lawsuit Dec. 11 against the city of Santa Fe and Mayor Alan Webber. She accuses the city of violating the Whistleblower Protection Act by demoting her from a field lieutenant to an administrative position and a lower salary.
According to the lawsuit, Williams first raised concerns in December 2018 that her supervisor, Deputy Police Chief Robert Vasquez, was claiming time worked when he was out of the office. His time cards were signed-off by Chief Andrew Padilla, so Williams reported the discrepancies to then-City Manager Erik Litzenberg. ....
