The Brenthurst Library
To Whom It May Concern
I am the Head Librarian/Manager of The Brenthurst Library in Johannesburg, a privately-owned research library holding collections of books, pamphlets, manuscripts, artworks and photographic materials.

The library holds a substantial archive of manuscript material, and artworks and maps were in The Netherlands, so the Rijksmuseum wished to set up a website combining all the material for researchers. The manuscripts held here are fragile and very valuable, so it was important that they would be handled in line with best conservation practices. ....

Burma Redux | Dissident Voice

by Daniel Opacki / February 9th, 2021
When I arrived in Rangoon in 2008, I felt as though I stepped into the pages of a forgotten colonial story within a musty old book. As I looked around Rangoon on my daily walks outward from central Rangoon, I saw the city was fully developed but neglected and abused by a lack of electricity and repair. Staunch British colonial architecture often sat behind rusted barbed wired fence pinched by wild-grown landscape and tall cackled trees. Absent in the decayed city was an overabundance of cars on the streets. Generators on curbsides everywhere belched exhaust into sweet jasmine air and shot power into buildings. Still, most people had no generators, and for them, the Dictatorship doled out stingy amounts of current late at night, usually between one to five in the morning. Burma’s people lived without basic necessities everyone in the modern world took for granted. Life moved slowly among street markets and sidewalk teashops that edged int ....

GREAT FALLS — Marcus Collins and his family have lived in Montana for over 25 years. Andre Murphy and his have been here for 16 years. Both Collins and Murphy are part of Montana’s second-smallest designated population, according to the most recent available statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau and montana.gov: Black/African-American.
But the two have more in common, and play a more important role in the Great Falls community, than just the color of their skin. Both men are pastors, Collins at Alexander Temple Church of God in Christ, Murphy at Living Grace Church. And both use that platform to promote conversations about race and inequality whenever they can. ....

BEEP BEEP, BEEP BEEP. Phil Plait, in a “Bad Astronomy” entry at
…A standard radio astronomy technique to make sure that what you see is coming from the object you’re observing is to move the telescope back and forth a bit to point to a different part of the sky and see if the signal persists (perhaps leaking into the dish from a source nearby); this is called “nodding” because it’s like a head nodding. When they did this, the signal went away, then came back when they repointed at Proxima. ....
