As recalcitrant subjects in Indian history, Dalits were always a problem for the status quo and the politics and ideas that attempted to transform it. True to their outlier position in caste Hindu society as stigmatised beings, they endure abject poverty, and their condition is incomprehensible even to the well-meaning caste Hindu. Yet at times, they become problems for themselves and the people around them because of the swirling stigma and economic deprivations that bog them down and corrode their dignity.
Earlier in December, the Pune Police had denied permission to hold Elgar Parishad event on December 31 ahead of the anniversary of the Battle of Bhima Koregaon on January 1. Retired Bombay High Court judge BG Kolse-Patil had then warned that they will organise the event on the road after the police denied the permission.
For the uninitiated, retired Supreme Court judge PB Sawant and retired justice BG Kolse Patil were the conveners of the first Elgar Parishad held on December 31, 2017.
On the very next day, violence broke out in Bhima Koregaon during the annual gathering of Dalits on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the 1818 Battle of Koregaon Bhima. In the battle, the British army comprising a large contingent of Dalit Mahar soldiers had defeated the Peshwas. Dalits celebrate this victory as the beginning of self-assertion of oppressed communities.
Bhima Koregaon case: Three years of legal and rights violations
The violation of the rights of the activists, lawyers and scholars, disregard for rules and misuse of law has marked the case since the very beginning.

Maharashtraâs prisons routinely provide TVs, refrigerators, air conditioners, cellphones, and homemade food to hardcore criminals and politicians. Yet, they refused to give a drinking straw to Stan Swamy, an 83-year-old scholar and activist awaiting trial. The police also denied a request to allow the family of Gautam Navlakha, who is 70, to send him prescription glasses. The courts were petitioned but they did little to help. The apathy shown by the police and the judicial system towards Swamy and Navlakha should not come as a surprise given that they are jailed in a case where the violation of human rights, disregard for rules and misuse of law has been apparent since the beginning. The Koregaon Bhima case itâs called.
