PORTLAND – The .380-caliber handgun that police recovered from Michael Reinoehl after officers shot and killed him outside a Washington apartment complex in September was the same gun used in the fatal downtown Portland shooting of a right-wing activist after a pro-Trump rally, forensic tests confirmed.
Thurston County Sheriff’s Lt. Cameron Simper said Wednesday that investigators seized the gun, test-fired it and sent a casing from it to the Oregon State Police crime lab.
The lab ruled that the casing came from the same handgun that killed Aaron “Jay” Danielson on Aug. 29, Simper said. ....

Prosecutors drop charges against Bellingham man accused in Olympia shooting

OLYMPIA, Wash. The Bellingham man accused of shooting a person at a protest in Olympia will not be charged.
25-year-old Forest M. Machala of Bellingham allegedly shot a 20-year-old man after supporters of President Trump and counter-protesters clashed near the Capitol Campus on December 12.
The victim was left with serious injuries.
A spokesperson for the Thurston County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office told The Olympian that prosecutors determined that they had insufficient evidence to proceed with charges.
The case is now back with Washington State Patrol.
Machala’s attorney says he believes investigators will determine the shooting was done in self defense. ....
