Apparently the Pentagon Is Thinking of Giving Jetpacks a Try Photo: Valery Hache/AFP (Getty Images) If you need further proof that we are living in a literal science fiction movie right now, look no further than the fact that the U.S. Defense Department is thinking about strapping jetpacks onto its special forces cadres. Well, actually the term they are using is “portable personal air mobility system,” but you get the picture. Advertisement The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Pentagon’s R&D hub for new military technologies, recently opened a bid for research proposals involving said “air mobility” systems. The agency has offered up to $1.5 million in development costs to vendors willing to make flying commandos a reality. ....
New director takes over at Pentagon’s top research office March 16 The Sea Hunter, developed by DARPA, has launched the Navy down a path of developing a fleet of unmanned ships that could upend the way the Navy has fought since the Cold War. (DARPA) WASHINGTON The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Pentagon’s top research arm, has a new leader. Stefanie Tompkins, President Joe Biden’s appointee, was sworn in Monday as DARPA director. She served 11 years in various roles at the agency, including a stint from 2017-2018 as acting deputy director. “I am honored and thrilled to return to DARPA, where breakthrough technologies are a near-daily occurrence. Such breakthroughs could not be more consequential for our national security, economic competitiveness, and our personal lives,” Tompkins said. ....
Pentagon Tries Jetpacks for Air Mobility: DARPA Testing New Military Technologies The U.S. Defense Department is taking their security up-to-date. This possibly means strapping jetpacks to their special forces, with this technology being called the Portable Personal Air Mobility System. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) offers up to $1.5 million in development costs for research proposals involving air mobility systems. A total of $225,000 will be used in the study phase of this program. If the proposals pass this phase, they will undergo ground and flight tests to check field performance. The agency invites any innovative research concepts on the technical domain of improving aerial operations. ....
The Defense Department is looking for ways to develop a framework for modeling and simulation on-demand so teams from the different branches and U.S. allies can develop and test new concepts. ....
By Theresa Hitchens on March 16, 2021 at 8:58 AM WASHINGTON: DARPA is seeking novel ways to boost the strength of radio signals to help DoD expand 5G wireless connectivity around the globe, without just pumping out more electrical power, says Tim Hancock, program manager for the effort. To that end, DoD’s far-future research agency has awarded a $497,000, one-year study contract to tiny wireless startup MixComm to demonstrate silicon-based millimeter wave (mmWave) power amplifiers. The “exploratory” award was made in response to Open Office Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) from DARPA’s Microsystems Technology Office (MTO). “These pre-decisional studies are often funded by DARPA to understand if there is sufficient justification to warrant a more formal investigation of a particular technology or research topic,” Hancock said in an email. “The technical goal of MixComm’s work with DARPA under this effort is to try and simultaneously push the ....
