There is a lot of talk about academic freedom. The index which measures this – oddly, those ardently opposed to any index or metrics cite this one merrily – is believed to demonstrate the incremental loss of academic freedom. Faculty, students, researchers are up in arms against states trying to determine what may be taught, researched and published. Reports of faculty being harassed for holding views deemed unacceptable by the ruling powers are distressing at the very least, and drive the quest for academic freedom: the freedom to think, teach and write. ....

The IIT Council has set up committees to look at greater autonomy for the elite institutions, in line with the National Education Policy recommendations, as well as reform of the academic Senate, grooming faculty to head the IITs, and innovative funding mechanisms.
The Council also recommended cutting IIT staff strength to lower levels, according to an Education Ministry statement. However, Council members said the discussion at Monday’s meeting only revolved around the need to reduce non-teaching manpower in the face of increasing digitisation and outsourcing, and no decisions were taken. ....

New Delhi [India], February 22 (ANI): Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank on Monday chaired the 54th meeting of the Council of Institutes of Technology (IITs) to discuss the implementation of New Education Policy(NEP) 2020.
During the virtual meeting, Pokhriyal asked IITs to develop Institute Development Plan as envisioned in NEP 2020 to improve the mobility of faculty between institutions and industries. The mobility of faculty members and industry experts between technical institutes and industry will promote collaborations between industry and academia, he said.
Earlier, a committee was constituted under the chairmanship of Dr K Radhakrishnan, Chairman, Standing Committee for IIT Council for suggesting recruitment of faculties in IITs (Industry interaction and mobility of faculty). ....
