Despite only eight people turning up to protest the live export trade continuing for two more years, animal advocate said the public support has grown.
A livestock carrier ship is experiencing engine difficulties while at Port Taranaki. Ocean Ute docked at Port Taranaki on March 5 and was meant to leave for China with a shipment of up to 4500 cows on March 9. But the 139-metre-long vessel has been unable to depart after one of its engines needed repairing. “The Ocean Ute has remained at Port Taranaki this week while repairs to one engine have been carried out,” a Port Taranaki media spokesperson said through email. No cattle are on the ship while the repairs are undertaken.

Another live export ship arrived in Taranaki on Friday before leaving shortly after due to bad weather. The vessel, Ocean Ute, is currently waiting off the coast of Kaikoura for bad weather to pass before returning to Port Taranaki, a Maritime NZ spokesperson said. “There are no livestock on board.”

The live export ship Ocean Ute is scheduled to arrive at Port Taranaki tomorrow to export thousands of cows. This is the second time Ocean Ute has exported animals from New Zealand this year.
Radio New Zealand reported today that a paper has been sent to Cabinet, with a decision on the future of the trade likely to be made in the next month or two month. The Government has been reviewing the live export trade since June 2019.
